Randy Shannon Out In Miami

Randy Shannon Out

The 4-year reign of head coach Randy Shannon in Miami is officially over after the Hurricanes lost at home to South Florida on Saturday. Shannon, who’s widely praised for cleaning up the off-the-field issues left over form the Larry Coker era, wasn’t able to build upon last season’s success (9-3) with 16 returning starters.

The expectations at Miami are high and a 28-22 won-loss record doesn’t buy you much, if any, job security in South Florida. Reasons for Shannon’s dismissal include: Miami losing by double digits to Florida State, Virginia Tech and Ohio State (combined 112-58); quarterback Jacory Harris showing no signs of improvement in 2010; fan apathy –only 23K fans attended Saturday’s loss to South Florida; and Shannon doesn’t care much for boosters.

Possible candidates being mentioned for the Canes’ opening include former and current Texas Tech head coaches Mike Leach and Tommy Tuberville (long shot), Mississippi State head coach Dan Mullen and Oklahoma defensive coordinator Brent Venables.
