Senate Second Vice President Receives Thai Delegation


Phnom Penh, December 23, 2010 AKP --

Cambodian Senate Second Vice President H.E. Tep Ngorn received here on Dec. 21 a visiting delegation of Thai Senate’s Foreign Affairs Standing Committee led by Mrs. Pikulkaew Krairiksh.

On the occasion, Mrs. Pikulkaew Krairiksh told H.E. Tep Ngorn of her delegation’s visit to Cambodia, the purpose of which she said is to strengthen the ties of friendship, solidarity and cooperation between the two countries and peoples as well as between the two Senates.

For his part, the Cambodian Senate second vice president warmly welcomed the visit of the Thai Senate delegation, saying that it will help boost the friendship, solidarity and cooperation between the two neighboring Kingdoms.

H.E. Tep Ngorn expressed profound thanks to Thailand for its assistance to the reconstruction and development of Cambodia, especially in education and infrastructure construction. --AKP

Second Sky Bridge To Be Constructed

Phnom Penh, December 23, 2010 AKP --

A ground-breaking ceremony to construct the second sky bridge at the intersection of Pet Lok Sang traffic light will be held on Dec. 29, due to be presided by Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen.

The opening of the construction site of the second pass-over bridge was released at a meeting of Phnom Penh City Hall held on Dec. 20.

The meeting also discussed some issues dealing with the impact on the nearby area in the process of the construction.

The bridge with 345 meters long and 15.20 meters wide, in the middle of which there is a one way bridge with 106 meters long and 6 meters wide going to Kampuchea Krom Blvd., is expected to be completed by early 2012, according to Phnom Penh City Hall.

The city planned to build other pass-over bridge at the intersection of Tuol Kork traffic light in the future.

The first sky bridge has been constructed along Monivong Blvd. adjacent to Monivong Bridge, with the aim to reduce the traffic congestion in the area. The construction costs more than US$6 million funded by the royal government. --AKP

Cambodia Awards Medal and Khmer Honorary Nationality to OKADA Foundation’s Chairman

Phnom Penh, December 23, 2010 AKP --

Cambodia has awarded a medal and the Khmer honorary nationality to Mr. Takuya Okada, chairman of OKADA Foundation for his key contribution to Cambodia’s development.

The awarding ceremony was held here on Tuesday under the presidency of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister in charge of the Office of the Council of Ministers H.E. Sok An and Japanese Ambassador to Cambodia H.E. Masafumi Kuroki.

On the occasion, H.E. Sok An appreciated and thanked Mr. Takuya Okada for his contribution to the development of the fields of education, social affairs, culture and environment protection in Cambodia.

For his part, Mr. Takuya Okada, 85, said this is a pride for him as well as for other Japanese people. He promised to continue to help Cambodia and to come back to Cambodia in late July 2011 to plant young trees in Siem Reap province, so as to boost the ties of friendship between Cambodia and Japan.

According to Undersecretary of State at the Office of the Council of Ministers H.E. Suos Yara, Mr. Takuya Okada established OKADA Foundation in 1980 and he has contributed to humanitarian activities in Cambodia since 1998. --AKP

Germany Contributes 1.2 Million Euro to Cambodian Side of the ECCC

Phnom Penh, December 23, 2010 AKP --

The Government of the Federal Republic of Germany through the GTZ has contributed 1.2 million Euro to the project of Victims Improved Participation in the Proceedings of the ECCC, according to the tribunal’s press release dated Dec. 21.

The Project documents were signed by GTZ Regional Director for South Asia, Laos, and Cambodia on Dec. 16 and also signed by H.E. Tony Kranh, Acting Director of Administration of the ECCC, on Dec. 20.

The contribution is made for the 16 months Project which started in September 2010 and will end on Dec. 31, 2011. This project will cover the activities of processing, outreach, and legal representation before the ECCC. Victim’s participation is one of the areas in which the ECCC is breaking new ground and setting new standards for courts with international support and involvement. The project will continue to strengthen justice and reconciliation through the efficient participation of Victims within the ECCC.

Germany is one of the ECCC’s key donors and has been supporting the ECCC since the tribunal’s establishment in 2006. Up to date, Germany has donated over 7 million Euro for both the international and national sides of the ECCC since 2005. In 2010 alone – as in 2009 – Germany has to date paid 1.5 million Euro to the ECCC. --AKP

Some 70 Percent of Cambodian Households To Have Access to Electricity in 2030

Phnom Penh, December 23, 2010 AKP --

Cambodia has been developing its electricity power sector and some 70 percent of the total households will have access to electricity by 2030, H.E. Suy Sem, minister of Industry, Mines and Energy said on Dec. 21.

Addressing the annual year-end meeting of EDC (Electricité du Cambodge), H.E. Suy Sem said currently, around 50 percent of Cambodia’s total villages have been benefited from the electricity supply service.

According an EDC report, up to December 2010, over 200 licenses have been granted to supply the electricity throughout the country.

About 257 representatives from the EDC provincial and city offices and other relevant companies across the country attended the meeting. --AKP

Global Fund Donates US$100 Million To Combat Malaria in Cambodia

Phnom Penh, December 23, 2010 AKP --

The Global Fund has agreed to provide US$102,033,561 in aid to Cambodia for 6-year term starting form the end of 2010 to 2015 to fight against malaria in Cambodia, National Center for Malaria Control’s senior official said.

Dr. Duong Socheat, director of National Center for Malaria Control, said through this fund, the center will cooperate with the relevant institutions as well as local and international organizations to combat and reduce the malaria’s mortality rate.

According to the center’s report, there were 36,992 malaria cases in the first nine months of 2010, including 73 died, or a decrease of around 40 percent if compared to the same period of 2009. --AKP

Golf Competition for Hun Sen Golf Cup Concluded

Phnom Penh, December 23, 2009 AKP --

The 2nd golf competition for Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen Golf Cup to celebrate the 32nd birthday of 7 January Victory Day was concluded in Siem Reap last Sunday.

H.E. Ly Thuch, senior minister in charge of specialized missions won a Hyundai Suvvchiele Veracruz for the first prize, while Mr. Suong Heng took the second with a Samsung television and Mr. In Chantha took the third with a set of golf clubs at the final tournament.

The opening ceremony of the tournament was presided over by National Assembly President Samdech Akka Moha Ponhea Chakrei Heng Samrin, and Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister H.E. Tea Banh, president of the Golf Federation of Cambodia and a high representative of Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen.

Addressing the awarding ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister H.E. Tea Banh said this month, Siem Reap province has hosted three important golf tournaments, which show that Cambodia is in full peace and safety. --AKP

Phnom Penh’s Kite Receives First Prize

Phnom Penh, December 23, 2010 AKP --

The kite of Phnom Penh capital city won the first prize during the 14th Kite Festival held on Tuesday at Koh Pich Convention and Exhibition Center, Phnom Penh.

Battambang’s kite got the second prize, while those from Kandal, Prey Veng and Oddar Meanchey the third.

The kites have been valued by their sound, their appearance and the technique to fly them.

Twenty provinces and municipality participated in this contest organized by the Ministry of the Culture and Fine Arts.

According to Secretary of State for the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts Mrs. Menh Kosony, Cambodian kite has also participated many times in the international competitions. It won the first prize in 2009 and the third prize in 2008 at the Internal Kite Festival in India. It also won the third prize in the International Kite Festival in China in 2007.

Cambodia has celebrated the kite festival since 400 years before J.C., or since the foundation of Nokor Phnom, the Khmer first City. --AKP

Cambodian Gymnasts Wins Medals in Vietnam

Phnom Penh, December 23, 2010 AKP --

Cambodia has won a silver and a bronze medals at the 2nd Aerobic Gymnastics Asian Championship in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

Cambodia sent seven gymnasts to compete with those from 10 Asian countries including China, Japan, Hong Kong, South Korea, Mongolia, Vietnam, Iran, India, Philippines and Sri Lanka in the 2nd Aerobic Gymnastics Asian Championship taking place from Dec. 16 to 18 in Ho Chi Minh City. --AKP
